Christmas Prophecy 20

The Messiah would suffer thirst.

Prophecy -

Psalm 69:21
And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

Fulfillment -

John 19:28-30
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

It is interesting to me that the cross-reference in my Bible for this passage is Psalm 22:15. Psalm 22 is another one of the Messianic Psalms. Read it through and picture Christ on the cross. Read it as if He is thinking and saying these things. It is amazing! Verse 15 says my tongue clings to my jaws. That very well could be describing intense thirst. This Psalm was written about 1,000 years before Christ! How could it detail so many things about Christ, from being reproached and despised by people, to them even saying, "let God rescue Him!" (the Pharisees indeed taunted Him aloud and indicated that He should call on God to deliver Him from the cross, IF He was the Son of God--see Matthew 27:43), to detailed descriptions of the pain in His bones and heart, to the piercing of His hands and feet, to the dividing of His clothing?

Because our Bible is not simple a book of stories passed down from men. It is the inspired Word of God. It is a message system from outside our time-domain. It is a love story! It tells how much God loves YOU, that He sent His only Son to die for YOU, to take YOUR place, to pay for YOUR sins!

I love the last few verses of Psalm 22 -

27 All the ends of the world
Shall remember and turn to the LORD,
And all the families of the nations
Shall worship before You.

28 For the kingdom is the LORD’s,
And He rules over the nations.

One day soon, Jesus will come back and rule and reign on a literal throne forever and ever.

Very well said. Thanks for your post linking the Christmas story to the present and future.
